Nigerian baby names: 130 Urhobo names for girls and their meanings

Posted By: Maternity Nest 0 Comment Urhobo names

Urhobo waado!

Looking for a befitting Urhobo name for your little princess? We are happy to help!

The Urhobo people are the major ethnic group in Delta State, southern Nigeria. In naming their children, Urhobo parents are very careful in choosing a name, due to a general belief that a child’s destiny is strongly tied to his or her name.

According to their traditional religion, Ọghẹnẹ is the Almighty God, while Erivwin is the cult of ancestors and predecessors (Esemo and Iniemo).  The Urhobos believe that man is made of two beings: the physical body (Ugboma), and the spiritual body or spirit man (Erhi). The Erhi decides a man’s destiny and it’s realization before he incarnates into the world. Erhi also controls the overall well being (ufuoma) of the man.

All these beliefs of the Urhobo people are reflected in the strong spiritual or religious significance of their names. Most Urhobo names also reflect wealth, place of birth, weather conditions, natural resources, and colour.

Our list is a combination of all these. Choose a name for you baby girl from our comprehensive list below:
