History was made by the Doctors of Safe Hands Medicare Center Nigeria, who removed a 26kg fibroid mass from a woman, making it the largest ever mass to be removed from a human being in the whole world. The surgery was said to have been done without blood transfusion.
The news which was shared by Abraham O.C Ogolo on Facebook, was to let people know the difference access to good healthcare can make. Without quality healthcare, ill practices, illiterate mentality, and wrong diagnosis will prevail, leading to unwarranted deaths.
“It is a common belief in Africa that a woman with a large mass such as this one may have been cursed by someone in her present or in her past life. Some unqualified personnel may even attempt to make incisions (cuts) with unsterilized blades or knives all over her abdomen”, said Abraham. “She may be given different substances to drink and eat in order to deflate the tummy. Wrong diagnosis can be done in the absence of diagnostic equipment. This is the reason many still die in developing countries”, he added.
According to the hospital’s histolopathology report, the 26kg mass was a 32cm degenerating fibroid, this only means the woman must have been in terrible pain, in addition to the discomfort of a bulging belly.
A fibroid is said to be degenerating when the blood vessels that supply it with oxygen and nutrients are no longer able to do this, which usually results in an excruciating pain.
Thankfully, this lady has now gotten relief. Kudos to Safe Hands Medicare Center.
