Go mama! Nigerian grandma becomes a graduate at the age of 79

Age is just a number, and is never a barrier to achieving one’s dreams. This has been proved by 79-year old Hajiya Fatima Kurfi, a mom of four, and grandma to more than 20 children; who recently accomplished her lifelong dream of becoming a graduate. With a Bachelors degree in Islamic studies from the Al-Qalaam University, Katsina in 2009,  she only celebrated her convocation last week, alongside other 1678 graduates at the school’s maiden convocation ceremony, reports Daily Trust.

“An uneducated person is not complete. Even if he tries other ventures like business, his lack of education will limit him greatly,” she said to Daily trust, while explaining why she had to seek formal education against all odds, including being enrolled in the same class as her grandchild during her secondary school days.

‘Mama Kurfi’ as she is fondly called, is a staunch advocate of girl-child education, which she demonstrates by running a Non Governmental Organisation dedicated to the education of the girl child. She is also the proprietress of a private school where children from humble backgrounds are given access to both Western and Islamic education.

How inspiring!
